The BinBase system is using a dot based similarity algorithm which was developed by stephen stein.

The used algorithm is very effective at finding similar massspecs, but fails in case of very similar compounds, like sugars or isomers. For this reason it needs to be combined with other methods of detection which we wil explain in other parts of this website.
